Children Dying of Hunger in Gaza: The Shame of Humanity
Mehmet Ali DEMİRThe deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza reveals its harshest face in the tragedy of children dying from hunger. Hunger is not merely a lack of food; it is the most shameful indictment of the modern world. This reality exposes the murderous and occupying face of Israel’s policies. Before the eyes of Europe and countries across the globe, in the midst of the 21st century, children perishing from malnutrition is not only a tragedy of the Middle East but a crime against all of humanity. The phrase “it is in the hands and on the faces of Europeans” today extends beyond Europe, pointing to the silence, passivity, and at times open complicity of governments worldwide.
In Gaza, the absence of medicine, clean water, and basic food has pushed children to the brink of death. Swollen bellies from starvation, emaciated bodies from malnutrition—these are not only a mirror held up to Europe, but also to societies across the world, from the Americas to Asia, from Africa to Latin America. Just a few kilometers away, excess and consumer culture are celebrated at their peak, while in Gaza children march toward death for a morsel of bread. This picture reveals the enduring face of Israel’s occupation, siege, and policy of deliberate starvation.
Europe and global powers continue to lecture the world on human rights, democracy, and freedom, yet when faced with the deaths of Gaza’s children, they retreat into a hypocritical silence. While aid and sanctions were swiftly organized in response to the war in Ukraine, when it comes to Gaza these measures are replaced by diplomatic calculations, geopolitical interests, and strategic silence. This attitude shows that not only Europe but the entire world is destroying its own proclaimed values.
The words “it is in the hands and on the faces of Europe and the world” call for a collective reckoning. The more the peoples of the world remain silent in the face of their governments’ policies, the more they share responsibility for every child who dies of hunger in Gaza. Losing one’s humanity is not only the burden of those who fire weapons, enforce blockades, or drop bombs—it is equally the crime of those who remain silent and turn their eyes away.
The death of children in Gaza from hunger is not merely “a distant tragedy.” It marks the collapse of humanity’s shared values. For Europe and the rest of the world, this situation demands a new confrontation with the past: genocides, war crimes, and the sins of colonialism. The true test of humanity is written on the faces of Gaza’s starving children under Israel’s occupation and military aggression.
Every child who dies of hunger in Gaza is a black mark on the face of humanity. If Europe and the world are to remain faithful to their consciences, their histories, and their values, they cannot stop at words of condemnation. They must take concrete action against Israel’s murderous and occupying policies. The hunger in Gaza has stained not only the hands of Europe but of the entire world; the only way to cleanse them is through justice, equality, and genuine solidarity.
